Socratic Seminar Reflection: Humans are contributing to global warming. We have factories and are burning fossil fuels which is causing the ocean temperature to rise and the air and water to get polluted. Some people are also to careless and don't throw their trash away. The trash then also pollutes the air and water. As a society, to help prevent global warming we could throw away our trash and drive electric cars to help prevent pollution. To help prevent global warming, I could pick up any trash I find on the ground. That is really all that I can do because I throw my own trash away and I don't drive.
Overall Reflection: The terrarium has been a fun mini project. My group and I work well together and we were all able to help in making the terrarium. I liked all of the different plants we were able to use. My group and I did a desert theme so we were able to use different types of cactus. I disliked it because I felt like I didn't learn a whole lot during this little project, but one thing I did learn is the names of different types of cactus. Since it was a smaller project, we didn't have to worry too much about time management and were able to get everything done on time. One thing we could have done better is care for our plant after we made the terrarium because it started dying. We also had a Find a Solution Project (to be continued).
CCD Reflection: CCD stands for Colony Collapse Disorder. A colony collapse disorder increases the number of bees dying. For this project we were given articles about CCD, found data, and graphed it. The factors that effect CCD are pesticides, chemicals, climate change, disease, and neonicotinoids. Climate changes are stabilizing, while disease is destabilizing. We used curve fits to find equations. To make the best line for the curve fit, we tested out different lines such a exponential. The one that was the best was the one that touched the most points graphed. On about news.com, I found out that if colony collapse disorder continues at this rate, managed honey bees will disappear by 2035. I also learned that the three neonicotinoid class insecticides- clothianidin, imidacloprid, and thiamethoxam- were the main culprits in weakening the bees' immune system.
Video Reflection: For this project, we had to choose an ecosystem that is negatively impacted by humans and say how we can change it. My group and I chose to talk about Tahoe and how it is being polluted. Humans are negatively impacting it by throwing trash in the lake and from all the smoke coming from people at the casinos near the lake. To decrease the amount of pollution, people need to stop smoking so much near the lake and need to throw their trash in the trash can...not the lake. I think my group and I worked well together and we were all able to participate. In addition to collaborating well, my group and I also were able to finish our video on time, so we had decent time management, but there is still room for improving. My group and I need to work on staying on task. We seemed to get distracted easily. We also need to think before we act because we did our voice recordings separate from the video hoping to attach it to the video later, but it turns out that you cant do that, so we had to re-record our voices straight onto the video. I learned that Tahoe looses about one foot of clarity per year and that human waste is being piped into the lake and it has led to a massive increase in algae. This is important to my society and I because it is a place we like to go vacation and have fun. We do not want our ecosystem to be polluted and don't want to swim in dirty water.

Terrarium Proposal: My group and I's terrarium was a desert theme. We used rocks and dirt for the ground and put in two worms as decomposers. We watered our plants weekly and noticed many changes. I thought I saw a root on the side of the terrarium bowl which means that one our plants was growing! As you can see in the pictures below, the larger cactus has become darker and more red each week. That means that it has dies because it started out green:(
Human Body Project Proposal
Description (possible ideas):
- Water and oil in a container and the liquids separate, then we pull out the water acting as the blood and filter it back through. After that we pull out the oil acting as the urine, or waste of the system. The water gets put back in the container while the oil acts a drip/ supply center for the oil in the container.
- Container with water and oil and filtration system (dialisis tubing)
Functions:
http://www.davita.com/treatment-options/hemodialysis/in-center-hemodialysis/how-does-a-dialysis-machine-work?/t/5596
In the dialyser, blood is diffused with a saline solution called dialysate, and the dialysate is in turn diffused with blood.
Materials: water, oil, dialysis tubing,
Construction Plan:
Iodine and starch
Urine is an aqueous solution of greater than 95% water, with the remaining constituents, in order of decreasing concentration urea 9.3 g/L, chloride 1.87 g/L, sodium 1.17 g/L, potassium 0.750 g/L, creatinine 0.670 g/L and other dissolved ions, inorganic and organic(sugars) compounds (proteins, hormones, metabolites).
